The second board from the last set of the first knockout match in the Rosenblum is a really interesting board. Normally West plays 3 notrump. Double dummy sharks thrive on deals like this as the only way to beat it is to lead a spade and switch to the diamond jack at trick two. If instead south plays back his small spade declarer can win and play the queen of diamonds. The defenders can choose who gives the ninth trick.

Thanks to BBO we have records from three tables.
Campbell for Canada reached three clubs after heavy bidding from Bertheau-Nystrom. He made it on a crossruff line.
The Bessises had a Stayman auction to three notrump so Fischer led a diamond. Michel Bessis won and played a club to the jack and king. He took the next diamond with the ace and entered dummy with another club for the heart finesse. +600 for Pinot Noir.
The four other declarers had to cope with a spade lead to the ace and spade back in three notrump. No one found the obvious diamond queen.
At the Lavazza-Bramley match both declarers played a club to the jack and king. The Italians defended faultlessly. Duboin play back a high club. Demirev won in hand, entered dummy with another club and played the spade ten discarding his losing diamond. But Sementa simply played back a heart for one down. In the closed room Polowan played back his small diamond after the club king. Declarer simply played small and Morgan was endplayed. He played back a diamond after which declarer could claim but there was really nothing he could do. After a heart declarer can cash his heart tricks, enter dummy with a club and play a high spade discarding his heart loser. Nine tricks and twelve IMPs for Lavazza.
Kasimir tried his small heart at trick three but Levy won and played back the suit. When declarer tried a small club he could win and switch to a diamond to beat the contract and collect twelve badly needed IMPs for Pinot Noir. It wasn’t enough to win the match.
At the sixth table Fredin found - in my opinion - the best play of the jack of hearts at trick three. Either he has his third heart trick without losing one or get an entry to dummy. Thurston decided to deny the entry from declarer which proved to be wrong (after winning the queen he must play a diamond and north must switch back to hearts to beat the contract). Fredin continued with the queen of clubs and this time Thurston win (not the best again) and played the heart queen. Fredin used his to club entries to collect his spade trick. If Thurston duck the club queen declarer has to find that improbable queen of diamonds play to make the contract (even Fredin wouldn’t find it). Anyway contract made and twelve IMPs for team Fredin.
