Early endplay

The Netherlands practice match at ‘t Onstein is over halfway. It’s clear that the home teams are stronger than the visiting teams. Yet the board I chose features a nice endplay by Fantoni (who with Nunes was surprisingly left out of the Italian EC team).

Usually before an endplay in a suit contract declarer draws trumps and eliminates some suits. This time it was different.
The defence started with king and another spade which Fantoni ruffed. He cashed two high diamonds and took the ruffing finesse discarding his last spade from dummy. After ruffing West was endplayed. A pretty dummy play. (Covering the nine of diamonds doesn’t help. Declarer simply ruffs with the ace.)

At the other table Zia switched to a club after the spade king which sealed the fate of the contract.
